Counting Numbers 0-10

Counting numbers from 0 to 10 is an important early math skill in Numbers and Operations for Pre-K learners. Children learn that each number shows “how many” blocks there are in a group. The number 0 means no blocks at all.

Meet the Numbers:
  • 0 - Zero: no blocks
  • 1 - One: one block
  • 2 - Two: two blocks
  • 3 - Three: three blocks
  • 4 - Four: four blocks
  • 5 - Five: five blocks
  • 6 - Six: six blocks
  • 7 - Seven: seven blocks
  • 8 - Eight: eight blocks
  • 9 - Nine: nine blocks
  • 10 - Ten: ten blocks

Understanding Quantity

Children learn to connect a number to a set of blocks. For example, the number 6 means there are six blocks to count. Using numbers and blocks together helps children understand that numbers represent “how many.”

  • Show 1 block → Say: “One block.”
  • Show 4 blocks → Count: “1, 2, 3, 4 blocks.”
  • Show an empty space → Say: “Zero means no blocks.”

Hands-On Ways to Learn

Hands-on learning makes counting easy to understand. Use blocks, fingers, or pictures to help children see and count real quantities.

Interactive Activities:
  • Count block towers: “You built 5 blocks!”
  • Show numbers with fingers: “Can you show me 3?”
  • Match blocks to numbers: “Put 6 blocks next to the number 6.”
  • Draw blocks to match each number.
  • Use number cards and ask, “How many blocks go with this number?”

Real-Life Counting

At Home

Count blocks during playtime. Example: “You have 8 blocks in your bin.”

During Clean-Up

Count blocks as they’re picked up: “That’s 10 blocks back on the shelf.”

During Play

Build and count: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5 blocks high!”

During Reading

Pause at pictures and count: “Let’s count the blocks—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6!”

Tips for Parents and Teachers

  • Use real blocks for early counting practice.
  • Connect numbers to objects children can touch.
  • Encourage slow, careful counting with one-to-one pointing.
  • Introduce zero using empty spaces or trays.
  • Keep counting playful, simple, and encouraging.
Remember

Counting from 0 to 10 builds a strong foundation in number sense. Using blocks helps children connect numbers to real amounts and prepares them for early math skills like comparing and adding.
