Counting numbers from 0 to 10 is an important early math skill in Numbers and Operations for Pre-K learners. Children learn that each number shows “how many” blocks there are in a group. The number 0 means no blocks at all.
Children learn to connect a number to a set of blocks. For example, the number 6 means there are six blocks to count. Using numbers and blocks together helps children understand that numbers represent “how many.”
Hands-on learning makes counting easy to understand. Use blocks, fingers, or pictures to help children see and count real quantities.
Count blocks during playtime. Example: “You have 8 blocks in your bin.”
Count blocks as they’re picked up: “That’s 10 blocks back on the shelf.”
Build and count: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5 blocks high!”
Pause at pictures and count: “Let’s count the blocks—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6!”
Counting from 0 to 10 builds a strong foundation in number sense. Using blocks helps children connect numbers to real amounts and prepares them for early math skills like comparing and adding.
