K.3 Addition up to 10 with numbers formation

Loading questions...

What Is Addition?

Addition means putting two groups of numbers together to find out how many there are in total.

Example Problems:
  • 3 + 2 = 5 (Three plus two equals five)
  • 0 + 4 = 4 (Zero plus four equals four)
  • 5 + 5 = 10 (Five plus five equals ten)
Helpful Hint

Use fingers or small objects to help count each group before combining them for the total.

Writing Addition Sentences

Students learn to write addition problems using numbers and symbols: the plus (+) sign and the equals (=) sign.

Example Sentences:
  • 2 + 3 = 5
  • 1 + 6 = 7
  • 4 + 4 = 8
Teacher Tip

Encourage students to say the number sentence aloud as they write it to connect symbols with spoken words.

Using Number Lines to Add

A number line helps students visually add numbers by β€œjumping” forward from one number to the next.

Example:
  • Start at 3 on the number line, jump 4 steps forward β†’ land on 7
  • Start at 0, jump 5 steps β†’ land on 5
Reminder

Number lines build a strong visual understanding of addition by showing how numbers increase as you add.

Check Your Addition With Objects

Students can count physical objects like blocks or counters to find the sum and check their work.

Example:
  • Put 2 red blocks and 3 blue blocks together β†’ count all blocks to find 5
  • Combine 1 green block and 4 yellow blocks β†’ total is 5
Helpful Hint

Encourage students to physically move objects together and count slowly to understand addition concretely.
