What Is a Verb?

A verb is an action word. Verbs tell what a person, animal, or thing does.

Examples of Verbs:
  • run, jump, play
  • eat, sleep, sing
  • read, write, draw
Helpful to Remember

Verbs show action. If it is something you can do, it is probably a verb.

Verbs in Sentences

A verb tells what is happening in the sentence. Every complete sentence needs a verb.

Examples of Verbs in Sentences:
  • The dog runs fast.
  • The baby sleeps in the crib.
  • The children play outside.
Helpful to Remember

Without a verb, a sentence is not complete. The verb tells the action that happens.

Action Verbs We Use Every Day

Many verbs describe the things children do in daily life, such as moving, eating, or talking.

Common Everyday Verbs:
  • Move: walk, jump, climb
  • Eat/Drink: eat, drink, chew
  • Talk/Listen: talk, shout, listen
  • Learn/Play: read, draw, play
Helpful to Remember

Verbs are everywhere. Notice the actions people, animals, and things do around you.

Singular and Plural with Verbs

Verbs can change when talking about one person (singular) or more than one (plural).

Examples:
  • Singular: The boy runs.
  • Plural: The boys run.
  • Singular: She eats.
  • Plural: They eat.
Helpful to Remember

With one person, we often add -s to the verb. With more than one, the verb usually does not have -s.
