Convert decimals to fractions

To convert a decimal to a fraction means to write the decimal number as a fraction with a numerator and a denominator. Both forms show the same value, just in different ways.

Examples:
  • 0.5 = 12
  • 0.25 = 14
  • 0.75 = 34
Note

Decimals and fractions both represent parts of a whole. They are two ways to show the same quantity.

How to convert a decimal to a fraction

Follow these steps to change a decimal into a fraction by using place value and simplifying when possible.

Steps:
  • Step 1: Write down the decimal number. Example: 0.6
  • Step 2: Say the decimal out loud using place value. 0.6 is “six tenths.”
  • Step 3: Write the fraction as 610.
  • Step 4: Simplify the fraction if possible: 610 = 35.
Note

The number of decimal places tells you the denominator. One decimal place means tenths, two means hundredths, and three means thousandths.

Decimals with two or more digits

When a decimal has two or more digits after the decimal point, the fraction’s denominator will be 100 or 1000 depending on the number of decimal places.

Examples:
  • 0.25 = 25100 = 14
  • 0.125 = 1251000 = 18
  • 0.40 = 40100 = 25
Note

Always simplify your fractions to lowest terms by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.

Terminating and repeating decimals

Some decimals stop after a few digits (terminating), while others continue with a repeating pattern (repeating). Both can be written as fractions.

Examples:
  • Terminating: 0.8 = 45
  • Repeating: 0.333... = 13
Note

Repeating decimals use a line or dot above the repeating digit, such as 0.3 for 0.333… .

Using decimals and fractions in real life

Decimals and fractions are used every day when measuring, shopping, or working with money. Knowing how to change between them helps in real-world situations.

Examples:
  • A half dollar is 0.5 or 12 of a dollar.
  • 0.75 of a cup of sugar equals 34 of a cup.
Note

Understanding both forms makes comparing and calculating with numbers easier in daily life.
