CC.1 Put the words in alphabetical order

Loading questions...

What does alphabetical order mean?

Alphabetical order means arranging words based on the order of the letters in the alphabet, from A to Z.

Examples:
  • apple, ball, cat, dog
  • fish, frog, goat, hat
Note

Think of the alphabet song: A, B, C, D... This is the order you follow when organizing words.

How do you put words in alphabetical order?

To alphabetize words, compare the letters starting from the left. If the first letters are the same, move to the next letter until you find a difference.

Steps:
  • Compare: game and gift
  • Both begin with “g,” so look at the second letter.
  • “a” comes before “i,” so game comes before gift.
Note

If two words are exactly the same, list them in the order given. The rule only matters when letters are different.

How to identify the correct order

Look carefully at the first letter of each word. If they match, check the next letter. Continue until you know which word comes first.

Examples:
  • bat and ball → Compare the second letters: “a” and “a” are the same. Then look at the third letters: “t” vs. “l.” Since “l” comes before “t,” ball comes before bat.
  • sand and snow → Both start with “s.” Compare second letters: “a” vs. “n.” Since “a” comes before “n,” sand comes before snow.
Note

Be patient. Sometimes you need to look at the second, third, or even fourth letter to decide.

Why is alphabetical order important?

Alphabetical order helps us find and organize information quickly in dictionaries, glossaries, indexes, and word lists.

Examples in real life:
  • Looking up words in a dictionary.
  • Finding a book by the author’s last name in a library.
  • Checking a glossary at the back of a textbook.
Note

Practicing alphabetical order builds strong reference and vocabulary skills that help in reading and writing.

Tips for practicing alphabetical order

Use strategies to make alphabetizing easier and faster.

Helpful Tips:
  • Say the alphabet quietly in your head to check letter order.
  • Underline or highlight the first different letter in each word to compare.
  • Write the words out in order to double-check your work.
Note

With practice, alphabetizing will become automatic and easier to do quickly.
