Most abbreviations begin with a capital letter and end with a period.

Using abbreviations in sentences

Examples:
  • β€œOur meeting is on Wednesday.” β†’ β€œOur meeting is on Wed.”
  • β€œHer birthday is in December.” β†’ β€œHer birthday is in Dec.”
  • β€œWe will leave on Saturday, July 15.” β†’ β€œWe will leave on Sat., Jul. 15.”
Note

When abbreviations are part of a date, always use correct punctuation and capitalization.

Why abbreviations are important

Abbreviations make writing shorter and clearer, especially in dates, notes, and schedules. Learning them helps you read and write more efficiently.

Examples in Real Life:
  • A school calendar may list: Mon., Sep. 5 – No School

Abbreviations are part of formal writing rules. Using them correctly shows attention to detail.
