What is an introduction?

An introduction is the beginning of a piece of writing. It tells the reader what the topic is about and captures their attention so they want to keep reading.

Examples:
  • “Have you ever wondered what life would be like without electricity?”
  • “Dogs are amazing pets because they are loyal, playful, and protective.”
Note

A strong introduction gives the reader a clear idea of the topic and makes them want to continue reading.

Why is the introduction important?

The introduction sets the tone for the entire piece of writing. It helps readers know what to expect and why the topic matters.

Examples:
  • An essay about recycling should start by explaining why recycling is important.
  • A story about summer vacation should start by sharing where you went or what made it special.
Note

Think of an introduction as the “first impression” your writing makes on the reader.

Ways to begin an introduction

There are many strategies for starting an introduction. Good writers choose the one that best fits their purpose and audience.

Strategies:
  • Ask a question: “What would you do if you found a lost puppy?”
  • Give a fact: “The ocean covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface.”
  • Use a strong statement: “Reading every day can change your life.”
Note

Choose a strategy that matches your topic and helps readers connect with your writing right away.

How to stay focused in your introduction

Every introduction should stay on topic. Do not include extra details that confuse the reader. Keep it clear and focused.

Examples:
  • Good: “My favorite sport is soccer because it is fun, exciting, and challenging.”
  • Not clear: “My favorite sport is soccer. I also like pizza and movies.”
Note

Stay focused on your main idea. The introduction should connect directly to the rest of your writing.

Putting it all together

A strong introduction captures attention, explains the topic, and prepares the reader for what comes next. Practice writing different introductions to see which ones work best.

Example Introduction:
  • “Have you ever thought about how important water is in our daily lives? Without water, we could not cook, clean, or even survive. This essay will explain why saving water is so important.”
Note

Practice writing introductions with different strategies until you find the one that fits your writing best.
