BB. Measure with an inch ruler

Loading questions...

What is an inch ruler?

An inch ruler is a tool used to measure length in the customary system. Each ruler shows inches, which can be divided into smaller parts such as halves, fourths, and eighths.

Examples:
  • 1 inch is about the length of a small paperclip.
  • 12 inches equals 1 foot.
Note

An inch is a standard unit of measurement in the United States customary system. You will use it often in real life.

How do you measure with an inch ruler?

To measure with an inch ruler, line up the object with the zero mark on the ruler, not the edge. Read the number at the other end of the object.

Steps:
  • Place the object so that one end is at the 0 mark.
  • Look across the ruler to the other end of the object.
  • Read the nearest inch or fraction of an inch.
Note

Always begin at the 0 mark. If you start at the ruler’s edge instead of 0, your measurement may be incorrect.

Reading fractions of an inch

Inches are divided into smaller parts. Most rulers show halves (1/2), fourths (1/4), and eighths (1/8). These fractions help measure more precisely.

Examples:
  • 1/2 inch is halfway between two inch marks.
  • 1/4 inch is one-fourth of an inch, or one out of four equal parts.
  • 3/4 inch is three out of four parts of an inch.
Note

Fractions on a ruler are always read in simplest form, like 1/2 instead of 2/4.

Examples in real life

We use inches every day when we measure small objects around us. Recognizing inches helps in both math and daily activities.

Examples:
  • The width of a thumb is about 1 inch.
  • A crayon is about 3 inches long.
  • A piece of notebook paper is 11 inches tall.
Note

When you measure real objects, you will often find whole inches or fractions of inches.
