B.1 Compare numbers up to one million

What does it mean to compare numbers?

Comparing numbers means deciding which number is greater, which is smaller, or if they are equal. This helps us understand the size of numbers and their place value up to one million.

Examples:
  • 25,430 is less than 103,215 β†’ 25,430 < 103,215
  • 589,210 is greater than 410,999 β†’ 589,210 > 410,999
  • 72,300 is equal to 72,300 β†’ 72,300 = 72,300
Note

Use the symbols < (less than), > (greater than), and = (equal to) when comparing numbers.

How do we identify which number is greater or smaller?

To identify the larger or smaller number, compare the digits in each place value starting from the left (hundred thousands place) until a difference is found.

Steps:
  • Line up the numbers by place value.
  • Compare the digits starting with the largest place (hundred thousands).
  • If the digits are the same, move to the next place value to the right.
  • Stop when you find a difference. The number with the larger digit in that place is greater.
Note

Always compare from left to right because the leftmost digit has the greatest value.

Examples of comparing numbers

Let’s practice comparing numbers by looking at their place values carefully.

Examples:
  • 345,678 vs. 456,789 β†’ Compare hundred thousands: 3 vs. 4 β†’ 345,678 < 456,789
  • 905,120 vs. 902,999 β†’ Compare hundred thousands: 9 vs. 9 (equal). Compare ten thousands: 0 vs. 0 (equal). Compare thousands: 5 vs. 2 β†’ 905,120 > 902,999
  • 750,400 vs. 750,400 β†’ All digits match β†’ 750,400 = 750,400
Note

Writing numbers one under the other can make comparisons easier, especially with larger numbers.

Helpful tips when comparing numbers

Keep these tips in mind to avoid mistakes when comparing numbers up to one million:

Tips:
  • Count the digits first. A number with more digits is always greater.
  • Compare place values carefully, from left to right.
  • Use comparison symbols correctly: <, >, =.
Note

Think of < and > as the mouth of an alligator. The alligator always β€œeats” the larger number.
