What does capitalization mean?

Capitalization is the use of uppercase (capital) letters at the beginning of certain words. We capitalize names, places, days of the week, months of the year, and holidays.

Examples:
  • monday β†’ Monday
  • december β†’ December
  • thanksgiving β†’ Thanksgiving
Note

Capital letters show importance and help readers recognize special words quickly.

Capitalizing days of the week

Every day of the week begins with a capital letter. Even though we use these words often, they are still proper nouns and need to be capitalized.

Examples:
  • tuesday β†’ Tuesday
  • friday β†’ Friday
  • sunday β†’ Sunday
Note

Days are always capitalized, whether they appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.

Capitalizing months of the year

Each month of the year also begins with a capital letter. Months are proper nouns just like days of the week.

Examples:
  • january β†’ January
  • april β†’ April
  • november β†’ November
Note

Do not confuse seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter) with months. Seasons are not capitalized unless they are part of a proper name (for example, Spring Festival).

Capitalizing holidays

Holidays are special days, and they always begin with capital letters. Each word in the holiday’s name is usually capitalized.

Examples:
  • christmas β†’ Christmas
  • halloween β†’ Halloween
  • independence day β†’ Independence Day
Note

When writing holidays, be sure to check whether each word in the holiday’s name should be capitalized.

Using capitalization in sentences

When you write days, months, or holidays in sentences, they must always be capitalized, just like names of people or places.

Examples:
  • β€œWe will visit Grandma on Saturday.”
  • β€œSchool starts again in August.”
  • β€œMy favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.”
Note

Always proofread your writing to check that days, months, and holidays are capitalized correctly.
