What are compound words?

Compound words are words formed when two smaller words are joined together to create a new word with its own meaning.

Examples:
  • sun + flower β†’ sunflower
  • rain + bow β†’ rainbow
  • basket + ball β†’ basketball
Note

A compound word is not just two words side by side; it creates a new meaning when combined.

Types of compound words

Compound words can be written in three different ways: closed, open, or hyphenated.

Examples:
  • Closed compound: notebook, football
  • Open compound: ice cream, post office
  • Hyphenated compound: mother-in-law, well-known
Note

Always check a dictionary if you are unsure how a compound word is written.

How do compound words work?

Each part of a compound word has meaning, but when joined together, the new word can have a different or more specific meaning.

Examples:
  • tooth + brush β†’ toothbrush (a tool for cleaning teeth)
  • fire + fly β†’ firefly (an insect that glows at night)
  • snow + man β†’ snowman (a figure made of snow)
Note

Try breaking the word apart to understand its meaning. Knowing the smaller words helps you figure out the whole compound word.

Using compound words in sentences

Practice reading and writing compound words in sentences to understand how they are used in everyday language.

Examples:
  • β€œWe packed sandwiches for the picnic table.”
  • β€œHe wore a raincoat because it was stormy.”
  • β€œThe homework is due tomorrow.”
Note

Reading aloud can help you hear how the smaller words fit together to form a compound word.
