What are prefixes and suffixes?

Prefixes and suffixes are word parts added to a base word to change its meaning. A prefix comes at the beginning of a word, and a suffix comes at the end of a word.

Examples:
  • Prefix: un + happy β†’ unhappy
  • Suffix: hope + ful β†’ hopeful
Note

Knowing prefixes and suffixes helps you figure out the meaning of new words while reading.

Understanding prefixes

A prefix is a group of letters added to the start of a word that changes its meaning. Prefixes often give clues about direction, time, number, or meaning.

Examples of prefixes:
  • re + do β†’ redo (do again)
  • pre + view β†’ preview (look at before)
  • dis + agree β†’ disagree (not agree)
Note

Prefixes never stand alone. They must be attached to a base word.

Understanding suffixes

A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word that changes its meaning or how it is used in a sentence.

Examples of suffixes:
  • teach + er β†’ teacher (a person who teaches)
  • care + ful β†’ careful (full of care)
  • help + less β†’ helpless (without help)
Note

Suffixes can change a word’s part of speech, such as turning a verb into a noun (teach β†’ teacher).

How prefixes and suffixes change meaning

When prefixes and suffixes are added to base words, the meaning or function of the word changes. This helps create new words that are useful in reading and writing.

Examples:
  • happy β†’ unhappy (opposite meaning)
  • hope β†’ hopeless (without hope)
  • play β†’ playful (full of play)
Note

Look carefully at the base word and the prefix or suffix to figure out the new meaning.

Using prefixes and suffixes in sentences

Practice using words with prefixes and suffixes in sentences to understand their meaning and how they fit in grammar.

Examples in sentences:
  • β€œShe redid her homework because she made a mistake.”
  • β€œThe kitten looked helpless without its mother.”
  • β€œHe is a very hopeful student who works hard.”
Note

Using prefixes and suffixes makes your writing stronger and your vocabulary larger.
