C.1 Order numbers

Loading questions...

What does it mean to order numbers?

Ordering numbers means arranging numbers from least to greatest or from greatest to least. This helps us compare the size of large numbers and understand their value.

Examples:
  • From least to greatest: 125,430; 237,895; 364,210
  • From greatest to least: 642,105; 531,872; 418,009
Note

When numbers get big, it is even more important to look carefully at each place value before deciding which is larger or smaller.

How do we identify the order of numbers?

To identify the order of numbers, compare digits from left to right, starting with the largest place value. For big numbers, this means starting with the hundred thousands place.

Steps:
  • Compare the hundred thousands place first.
  • If they are the same, compare the ten thousands place.
  • If those are the same, compare the thousands, then hundreds, tens, and ones.
Note

Work slowly from left to right. Each place value tells you more about the number’s size.

Examples of ordering numbers

Here are some examples that show how to order larger numbers correctly.

Examples:
  • Order 452,389; 367,415; 589,202 from least to greatest β†’ 367,415; 452,389; 589,202
  • Order 210,500; 998,321; 763,844 from greatest to least β†’ 998,321; 763,844; 210,500
Note

Remember: the largest digit in the highest place value decides which number is greater.

Using number lines to order numbers

A number line can also show the order of big numbers. Just like with small numbers, numbers to the left are smaller, and numbers to the right are larger.

Examples:
  • On a number line, 215,000 comes before 340,000. So, 215,000 is less than 340,000.
  • On a number line, 750,000 is after 642,000. So, 750,000 is greater than 642,000.
Note

Using number lines for large numbers helps you β€œsee” the difference, especially when the digits look similar.
