What does it mean to multiply by 0?

Multiplying by 0 means you are finding the total when you have zero groups of something. Any number multiplied by 0 will always equal 0.

Examples:
  • 0 × 5 = 0
  • 7 × 0 = 0
  • 12 × 0 = 0
Note

Think of 0 as “nothing.” No matter how many groups you start with, if you have zero groups, the total is always 0.

Why does multiplying by 0 always equal 0?

Multiplication is repeated addition. If you have 0 groups of any number, there is nothing to add, so the total is 0.

Examples:
  • 0 × 4 means 0 groups of 4 → nothing to add → 0
  • 9 × 0 means 9 groups of 0 → each group has nothing → 0
Note

Multiplying by 0 is different from adding 0. Adding 0 does not change a number, but multiplying by 0 always makes the total 0.

Key multiplication facts with 0

When multiplying by 0, the product will always be 0, no matter which number it is paired with (up to 12 in this case).

Facts to remember:
  • 0 × 0 = 0
  • 0 × 1 = 0
  • 0 × 2 = 0
  • 0 × 3 = 0
  • 0 × 4 = 0
  • 0 × 5 = 0
  • 0 × 6 = 0
  • 0 × 7 = 0
  • 0 × 8 = 0
  • 0 × 9 = 0
  • 0 × 10 = 0
  • 0 × 11 = 0
  • 0 × 12 = 0
Note

This rule works for all whole numbers, not just numbers up to 12. Multiplying by 0 always gives you 0.

Using multiplication by 0 in real life

Multiplication by 0 can describe real situations where there is nothing to count or no groups to add.

Examples:
  • If 0 people buy 3 tickets each, the total tickets sold = 0 × 3 = 0
  • If 5 baskets each hold 0 apples, the total apples = 5 × 0 = 0
Note

Real-world problems show that 0 in multiplication means “nothing is there.” This helps you remember the rule easily.
