What is place value?

Place value tells us the value of a digit based on its position in a number. Each place is ten times greater than the place to its right.

Example:
  • In 4,582 the digit 4 is in the thousands place, so its value is 4,000.
  • The digit 5 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 500.
Note

Always look at the position of the digit to find its value. The same digit can have different values depending on where it is.

Place value names up to ten thousands

The place value system uses specific names for each position. Starting from the right, the names are ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands.

Place Value Chart:
  • Ones β†’ 7 in 34,567 means 7 ones.
  • Tens β†’ 6 in 34,567 means 6 tens, or 60.
  • Hundreds β†’ 5 in 34,567 means 5 hundreds, or 500.
  • Thousands β†’ 4 in 34,567 means 4 thousands, or 4,000.
  • Ten Thousands β†’ 3 in 34,567 means 3 ten thousands, or 30,000.
Note

You can use a place value chart to help you read and understand large numbers more easily.

How to identify place value

To identify the place value of a digit, find its position by counting places from right to left: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, then ten thousands.

Steps:
  • Take the number 27,316.
  • The digit 7 is in the thousands place β†’ value 7,000.
  • The digit 3 is in the hundreds place β†’ value 300.
Note

Underline the digit you are studying, then use the place value names to find its value.

Using place value in numbers

Place value helps us read, write, and compare numbers correctly. It also helps us add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Examples:
  • 42,315 is read as β€œforty-two thousand, three hundred fifteen.”
  • 50,000 is greater than 9,999 because it has a digit in the ten thousands place.
  • In 18,407 the digit 8 means 8,000, not just 8.
Note

Understanding place value is the key to working with larger numbers and solving math problems accurately.
