BB.1 Identify fractions on number lines

Loading questions...

What are fractions?

Fractions are numbers that show equal parts of a whole. A fraction has a top number (numerator) and a bottom number (denominator).

Examples:
  • 1/2 means 1 part out of 2 equal parts.
  • 3/4 means 3 parts out of 4 equal parts.
Note

The numerator tells how many parts are shaded or counted. The denominator tells how many total equal parts the whole is divided into.

Fractions on a number line

A fraction can be shown on a number line by dividing the line between two whole numbers into equal parts. Each mark shows a fraction.

Examples:
  • On a line from 0 to 1 divided into 2 equal parts, the mark in the middle is 1/2.
  • On a line from 0 to 1 divided into 4 equal parts, the marks are 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, and then 1 whole.
Note

Always start at 0 and count the equal spaces. The denominator tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The numerator tells you how many of those parts to count.

How to identify fractions on a number line

To identify a fraction on a number line, look at how many equal parts are between 0 and 1 (the denominator), then count the marks from 0 (the numerator).

Steps:
  • See how many equal parts the number line is divided into. (Example: 4 equal parts β†’ denominator = 4)
  • Count the spaces from 0 to the mark. (Example: 3 spaces β†’ numerator = 3)
  • The fraction is 3/4.
Note

The fraction shows distance from zero, not just a picture of parts. This helps you understand fractions as numbers.

Mixed numbers on a number line

A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction together. On a number line, mixed numbers are shown after you pass a whole number.

Examples:
  • The point halfway between 1 and 2 is 1 1/2.
  • The point 3 parts out of 4 between 2 and 3 is 2 3/4.
Note

Think of mixed numbers as β€œwhole number + fraction.” Count whole numbers first, then count the fraction parts beyond the whole.
