What is division with equal groups?

Division is a way to split a number into equal groups. When we divide, we find out how many items are in each group or how many groups we can make.

Examples:
  • 12 ÷ 3 = 4 → 12 objects split into 3 groups gives 4 in each group.
  • 15 ÷ 5 = 3 → 15 objects split into 5 groups gives 3 in each group.
Note

Division is the opposite of multiplication. If 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

How to identify a division problem

A division problem can be recognized when a total amount is shared or grouped evenly. Look for words like “split,” “share,” or “groups of.”

Examples:
  • “24 cookies are shared equally among 6 friends.” → 24 ÷ 6 = 4
  • “There are 20 pencils, and each box holds 5 pencils. How many boxes?” → 20 ÷ 5 = 4
Note

If the problem asks you to split something into equal groups, you are dividing.

Steps to divide using equal groups

Follow these steps to solve a division problem using equal groups:

Steps:
  • Start with the total number.
  • Decide how many groups or how many items go in each group.
  • Share the total evenly among the groups.
  • Count the number in each group or the number of groups you made.
Note

Drawing circles or arrays can help you see the groups clearly when dividing.

Examples in sentences

Using division in real-world problems makes it easier to understand.

Examples:
  • “18 apples are divided equally among 6 baskets.” → Each basket has 3 apples.
  • “12 chairs are set up in 3 equal rows.” → Each row has 4 chairs.
  • “20 students line up in groups of 5.” → There are 4 groups.
Note

Ask yourself: Am I finding how many are in each group, or how many groups there are? This will guide you in solving correctly.
