What is division by 8?

Division by 8 is the mathematical operation of separating a total quantity into 8 equal groups or finding how many times 8 fits into a number.

Examples:
  • 24 ÷ 8 = 3 (24 separated into 8 groups gives 3 in each group)
  • 40 ÷ 8 = 5 (40 contains 5 groups of 8)
  • If you have 64 stickers and put them into 8 equal piles, each pile has 8 stickers.
Note

Division is the inverse of multiplication. Knowing your multiplication facts for 8 will help you solve division by 8 problems quickly.

How to divide by 8

To divide by 8, you can use repeated subtraction, equal grouping, or the related multiplication fact.

Methods:
  • Repeated Subtraction: 32 ÷ 8 = ? → Subtract 8 from 32 until you reach 0: 32 - 8 = 24, 24 - 8 = 16, 16 - 8 = 8, 8 - 8 = 0. You subtracted 4 times, so 32 ÷ 8 = 4.
  • Equal Groups: Draw 48 circles and put them into 8 groups. Count how many are in each group (6).
  • Multiplication Fact: Ask "8 times what number equals 56?" Since 8 × 7 = 56, then 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
Note

The multiplication fact method is usually the fastest. Think: "8 times what equals my dividend?"

All division facts for 8

Memorizing these basic facts will help you solve division by 8 problems quickly and accurately.

Division facts table (quotients up to 12):
  • 8 ÷ 8 = 1
  • 16 ÷ 8 = 2
  • 24 ÷ 8 = 3
  • 32 ÷ 8 = 4
  • 40 ÷ 8 = 5
  • 48 ÷ 8 = 6
  • 56 ÷ 8 = 7
  • 64 ÷ 8 = 8
  • 72 ÷ 8 = 9
  • 80 ÷ 8 = 10
  • 88 ÷ 8 = 11
  • 96 ÷ 8 = 12
Note

Notice the pattern: the quotients (answers) count up from 1 to 12. Each dividend increases by 8.

Using division by 8 in real situations

Division helps solve everyday problems involving equal sharing or grouping when the number 8 is involved.

Word problem examples:
  • "Ms. Brown has 72 pencils to share equally among 8 tables. How many pencils does each table get?" (72 ÷ 8 = 9)
  • "A baker packs muffins into boxes of 8. She has 88 muffins. How many full boxes can she make?" (88 ÷ 8 = 11)
  • "Eight friends earned $64 washing cars. If they split the money equally, how much does each friend get?" (64 ÷ 8 = 8)
Note

In word problems, look for phrases like "equal groups," "share equally," "divided among," or "how many in each" to know when to divide.

Checking your division work

You can verify a division answer by using multiplication, which is the inverse operation.

How to check:
  • If 96 ÷ 8 = 12, then check: 12 × 8 should equal 96. (12 × 8 = 96 ✓)
  • If 56 ÷ 8 = 7, then check: 7 × 8 should equal 56. (7 × 8 = 56 ✓)
  • For 40 ÷ 8 = 5, the check is: 5 × 8 = 40.
Note

Always check your work. If your quotient multiplied by 8 doesn't equal the original dividend, re-examine your division.
