T.5 Divide by 5: quotients up to 12

Loading questions...

What is division by 5?

Dividing by 5 means splitting a total quantity into 5 equal groups or finding how many groups of 5 are in a number. The answer is called the quotient.

Example:
  • 15 ÷ 5 = 3
  • This means 15 split into 5 equal groups gives 3 in each group.
  • It also means there are 3 groups of 5 in 15.
Note

Division is the inverse of multiplication. If you know 5 × 3 = 15, then you know 15 ÷ 5 = 3.

How to find quotients when dividing by 5

You can find the quotient by using repeated subtraction, equal groups, or by relating the problem to multiplication facts.

Steps using equal groups:
  • Problem: 20 ÷ 5
  • Draw 20 circles. Put them into 5 equal groups.
  • Count how many are in each group. The answer is 4.
  • So, 20 ÷ 5 = 4.
Note

Ask yourself: "What number multiplied by 5 gives me the total?" That number is your quotient.

Division facts for 5 (quotients up to 12)

Memorizing these basic facts helps you solve division problems quickly and accurately. Each fact is related to a multiplication fact in the 5s family.

Division facts table:
  • 5 ÷ 5 = 1
  • 10 ÷ 5 = 2
  • 15 ÷ 5 = 3
  • 20 ÷ 5 = 4
  • 25 ÷ 5 = 5
  • 30 ÷ 5 = 6
  • 35 ÷ 5 = 7
  • 40 ÷ 5 = 8
  • 45 ÷ 5 = 9
  • 50 ÷ 5 = 10
  • 55 ÷ 5 = 11
  • 60 ÷ 5 = 12
Note

Notice the pattern: the dividends (numbers being divided) count by 5s. The quotients count by 1s.

Using division facts in problem solving

Real-world problems often require you to interpret what a division equation means and use the correct fact to find the answer.

Example word problem:
  • "Leo has 30 pencils. He wants to put them equally into 5 pencil cups. How many pencils go in each cup?"
  • This is 30 ÷ 5.
  • From our facts, we know 30 ÷ 5 = 6.
  • Answer: Each cup gets 6 pencils.
Note

Always check if your answer makes sense. 5 groups of 6 pencils does equal 30 total pencils.
