What does it mean to divide by 2?

Division by 2 is the mathematical operation of splitting a whole number into two equal groups, or finding out how many groups of 2 are in a number.

Examples:
  • 8 ÷ 2 = 4 means 8 split into 2 equal groups gives 4 in each group.
  • 10 ÷ 2 = 5 means there are 5 groups of 2 in the number 10.
Note

Dividing by 2 is the same as taking half of a number. It is the inverse, or opposite, operation of multiplying by 2.

How to divide by 2

You can divide by 2 by using equal sharing, using repeated subtraction, or by knowing related multiplication facts.

Methods:
  • Equal Sharing: Share 12 cookies between 2 friends. Each friend gets 6. So, 12 ÷ 2 = 6.
  • Repeated Subtraction: Start at 14. Subtract 2 repeatedly until you reach 0: 14 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 = 0. You subtracted 7 times, so 14 ÷ 2 = 7.
  • Think Multiplication: Ask, "2 times what number equals 10?" Since 2 × 5 = 10, then 10 ÷ 2 = 5.
Note

An even number divided by 2 results in a whole number. An odd number divided by 2 results in a remainder of 1.

Division facts for 2

Memorizing the division facts for 2 helps you solve problems quickly and accurately. These facts use dividends up to 24.

Fact Family Table:
  • 2 ÷ 2 = 1
  • 4 ÷ 2 = 2
  • 6 ÷ 2 = 3
  • 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  • 10 ÷ 2 = 5
  • 12 ÷ 2 = 6
  • 14 ÷ 2 = 7
  • 16 ÷ 2 = 8
  • 18 ÷ 2 = 9
  • 20 ÷ 2 = 10
  • 22 ÷ 2 = 11
  • 24 ÷ 2 = 12
Note

Each division fact is related to a multiplication fact from the 2s table. For example, 24 ÷ 2 = 12 is related to 2 × 12 = 24.

Using division by 2 in real situations

We use division by 2 to solve problems involving pairs, halves, and fair sharing between two people or things.

Word Problem Examples:
  • Maria has 18 markers. She puts them into 2 boxes equally. How many markers are in each box? (18 ÷ 2 = 9)
  • A ribbon is 22 feet long. You cut it into 2 equal pieces. How long is each piece? (22 ÷ 2 = 11 feet)
  • There are 14 players on the field. If they form teams of 2 for a drill, how many teams are there? (14 ÷ 2 = 7 teams)
Note

Look for clue words like "split equally," "half," "between two," "shared," "each," or "per" to know when to divide by 2.
