What does it mean to divide by 1?

Division is the process of splitting a number into equal groups. When you divide a number by 1, the number stays the same because you are only making one group.

Examples:
  • 6 ÷ 1 = 6
  • 12 ÷ 1 = 12
  • 3 ÷ 1 = 3
Note

Dividing by 1 does not change the number. You are placing all of the objects into a single group.

Why does dividing by 1 always give the same number?

Any number divided by 1 equals itself because all of the objects are kept together in one whole group. Nothing is split apart.

Examples:
  • 8 ÷ 1 = 8 → Eight apples in one basket stay as eight apples.
  • 5 ÷ 1 = 5 → Five pencils in one box stay as five pencils.
Note

Think of it this way: dividing by 1 means, “How many are in one group?” The answer is always the original number.
