DDD.2 Use abbreviations for titles and names
What are abbreviations?
Abbreviations are shortened forms of words. They are used to make writing shorter and easier to read.
- Mister → Mr.
- Doctor → Dr.
- Street → St.
Most abbreviations begin with a capital letter and end with a period.
Why do we use abbreviations?
Abbreviations help writers save space and avoid repeating long words, especially in names and titles.
- Dr. Smith instead of Doctor Smith
- Mrs. Brown instead of Missus Brown
- Oak St. instead of Oak Street
Abbreviations are often used in addresses, lists, and names.
Abbreviations for titles
Titles tell us more about a person. Many titles have common abbreviations that are used before names.
- Mr. → Mister
- Mrs. → Missus
- Ms. → Miss
- Dr. → Doctor
Title abbreviations always begin with a capital letter.
Abbreviations in names and addresses
Abbreviations are often used in names and addresses to make them shorter and clearer.
- Road → Rd.
- Avenue → Ave.
- Mount → Mt.
When writing an address, abbreviations help keep the information neat and organized.
Using abbreviations correctly
Abbreviations should be used correctly so the reader understands the meaning.
- Dr. Lee is my dentist.
- I live on Pine St.
- Mrs. Green is my teacher.
If you are unsure, write the full word instead of the abbreviation.
