What are abbreviations?

Abbreviations are shortened forms of words. They help us write and read more quickly while keeping the meaning clear.

Examples:
  • Mr. β†’ Mister
  • Dr. β†’ Doctor
  • Feb. β†’ February
Note

Most abbreviations use a period at the end to show that the word has been shortened.

Why do we use abbreviations?

Abbreviations save space and time. They are especially helpful when writing dates, addresses, or titles.

Examples:
  • Instead of writing Doctor Smith, you can write Dr. Smith.
  • Instead of writing Saturday, February 10, you can write Sat., Feb. 10.
Note

Abbreviations should still be clear to the reader. Always check if the shortened form is commonly understood.

Abbreviations for the days of the week

Each day of the week has a standard abbreviation. These are used in calendars, schedules, and notes.

Day Abbreviation List:
  • Sunday β†’ Sun.
  • Monday β†’ Mon.
  • Tuesday β†’ Tue.
  • Wednesday β†’ Wed.
  • Thursday β†’ Thu.
  • Friday β†’ Fri.
  • Saturday β†’ Sat.
Note

Notice that each abbreviation starts with a capital letter and ends with a period.

Using day abbreviations in sentences

You can use abbreviations for days of the week when writing sentences, notes, or schedules.

Examples:
  • β€œWe will meet on Wednesday.” β†’ β€œWe will meet on Wed.”
  • β€œThe party is on Saturday.” β†’ β€œThe party is on Sat.”
  • β€œOur trip starts on Monday.” β†’ β€œOur trip starts on Mon.”
Note

Abbreviations should match the formality of your writing. In schoolwork, you may need to write out the full day name unless abbreviations are asked for.

Tips for remembering abbreviations

It can be tricky to remember all the abbreviations, but practice makes it easier.

Helpful Tips:
  • Say the day out loud, then shorten it.
  • Write the abbreviation next to the full word in your notes.
  • Use a calendar to practice reading and writing them often.
Note

The more you read and write abbreviations, the more natural they will become.
