What are personal pronouns?

Personal pronouns are words that take the place of specific nouns in a sentence. They refer to people, animals, or things without repeating their names.

Examples:
  • Maria is my friend. → She is my friend.
  • John and I play soccer. → We play soccer.
  • The dog is hungry. → It is hungry.
Note

Personal pronouns help sentences sound smoother by avoiding the repetition of nouns.

Types of personal pronouns

Personal pronouns change depending on who or what they refer to. They can be in the first person, second person, or third person.

Examples by type:
  • First person: I, we (speaker)
  • Second person: you (person spoken to)
  • Third person: he, she, it, they (person or thing spoken about)
Note

Think about who is doing the action to choose the correct type of pronoun.

Subject and object pronouns

Personal pronouns can act as the subject (who is doing the action) or the object (who receives the action) in a sentence.

Examples:
  • Subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  • Object pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them
  • “She likes pizza.” (She is the subject.)
  • “The teacher helped me.” (Me is the object.)
Note

Always match the pronoun form to its role in the sentence: subject or object.

Using pronouns correctly

When using pronouns, make sure they clearly refer to a noun and agree in number (singular or plural).

Examples:
  • “My brother is tall. He plays basketball.” (singular agreement)
  • “My friends are kind. They help me.” (plural agreement)
  • Avoid confusion: Instead of “When Mike met Tom, he was late,” say “When Mike met Tom, Mike was late.”
Note

Make sure it is clear who or what the pronoun is referring to in the sentence.

Pronouns in everyday writing

Pronouns make stories, conversations, and essays easier to read and understand. They help keep writing smooth and less repetitive.

Examples:
  • “Emma and I went to the park. We had fun.”
  • “David lost his book. Have you seen it?”
  • “Sarah loves animals. She wants to be a vet.”
Note

Using pronouns correctly shows clear and strong grammar skills.
