What is subtraction?

Subtraction is taking away one number from another to find the difference. It helps us answer β€œHow many are left?” or β€œHow many more do we need?”

Example:
  • If you have 8 apples and eat 3, then 8 βˆ’ 3 = 5. You have 5 apples left.
Note

Think of subtraction as comparing or taking away. The answer to a subtraction problem is called the difference.

Understanding subtraction word problems

A subtraction word problem uses a story to show taking away or finding how many are left. You turn the words into a number sentence to solve it.

Example:
  • β€œLiam had 7 balloons. 2 flew away. How many balloons does he have now?”
  • Number sentence: 7 βˆ’ 2 = 5
  • Answer: Liam has 5 balloons left.
Note

Look for words like left, remain, or how many more. These often signal subtraction.

Steps to solve a subtraction word problem

Follow these steps when you read a subtraction word problem:

Steps with Example:
  • Step 1: Read the problem carefully. β€œElla has 9 pencils. She gives 4 to her friend. How many does she have now?”
  • Step 2: Find the numbers: 9 and 4.
  • Step 3: Decide what to do: Subtract 4 from 9.
  • Step 4: Solve: 9 βˆ’ 4 = 5.
  • Answer: Ella has 5 pencils left.
Note

Always double-check your answer by rereading the problem and seeing if it makes sense in the story.

Using drawings and models

You can use pictures, counters, or number lines to help solve subtraction word problems. These tools make the problem easier to see.

Example with a drawing:
  • Problem: β€œBen had 6 cookies. He ate 2. How many are left?”
  • Draw 6 circles for cookies: β—‹ β—‹ β—‹ β—‹ β—‹ β—‹
  • Cross out 2: β—‹ β—‹ β—‹ β—‹
  • Count what is left: 4
  • Answer: Ben has 4 cookies left.
Note

Using drawings helps when the numbers are small and makes subtraction easier to understand.

Practice with small numbers

Start with small numbers (less than 10) and subtraction answers up to 20. This will help build strong subtraction skills.

Examples:
  • 5 βˆ’ 3 = 2
  • 7 βˆ’ 6 = 1
  • 9 βˆ’ 4 = 5
  • 10 βˆ’ 2 = 8
Note

Practice subtraction every day. The more you practice, the faster and more accurate you will become.
