What does it mean to read and write numbers up to 100?

Reading and writing numbers up to 100 means being able to say, recognize, and write numbers from 0 to 100 using both digits and words.

Examples:
  • Digit form: 25 โ†’ Word form: twenty-five
  • Digit form: 100 โ†’ Word form: one hundred
Note

Always remember: numbers can be written in two waysโ€”using digits and using words.

How to identify and write numbers correctly

To identify and write numbers, look at the place value of each digit. The tens place shows groups of ten, and the ones place shows how many single units are left.

Examples:
  • 47 โ†’ 4 tens and 7 ones โ†’ forty-seven
  • 62 โ†’ 6 tens and 2 ones โ†’ sixty-two
Note

Break numbers into tens and ones to make reading and writing them easier.

Reading and writing numbers in word form

When writing numbers in words, always use correct spelling and a hyphen between the tens and ones for numbers greater than twenty and less than one hundred.

Examples:
  • 34 โ†’ thirty-four
  • 58 โ†’ fifty-eight
  • 90 โ†’ ninety
Note

Do not use the word โ€œandโ€ when writing whole numbers. For example, write forty-two, not forty and two.

Using numbers up to 100 in real life

We use numbers every day for counting, measuring, and comparing amounts. Being able to read and write numbers helps us solve problems in the real world.

Examples:
  • Counting: โ€œThere are 45 students in the class.โ€
  • Money: โ€œThis toy costs 75 cents.โ€
  • Measuring: โ€œThe rope is 100 inches long.โ€
Note

Numbers are all around usโ€”in calendars, clocks, money, and more. Practice by reading numbers you see every day.
