OO.1 Measure with a centimeter ruler

Loading questions...

What does it mean to measure with a centimeter ruler?

Measuring with a centimeter ruler means finding out how long something is by using centimeters (cm) as the unit of length. A centimeter is a small unit used to measure shorter objects.

Examples:
  • A crayon is about 8 cm long.
  • A book might be 25 cm tall.
  • Your finger could be around 5 cm wide.
Note

Think of a centimeter as about the width of your pinky finger.

How do you use a centimeter ruler?

To measure correctly, line up one end of the object with the zero mark on the ruler. Then read the number at the other end of the object.

Steps:
  • Place the object so it starts at the β€œ0” mark.
  • Look straight at the numbers on the ruler.
  • Find the number where the object ends. That is its length in centimeters.
Note

Do not start at the edge of the ruler. Always begin at the zero mark.

Common measurements with a centimeter ruler

Everyday objects can be measured in centimeters. Knowing their sizes helps you compare and estimate lengths.

Examples:
  • A pencil is about 15 cm long.
  • A glue stick is about 10 cm tall.
  • A piece of paper is about 28 cm long on the longer side.
Note

Smaller objects like coins or buttons may be only 1–3 cm wide.

Using measurements in sentences

We can use measurements to describe objects in clear and complete sentences.

Examples:
  • β€œThe marker is 12 cm long.”
  • β€œMy notebook is 20 cm tall.”
  • β€œThe eraser is 4 cm wide.”
Note

Always include the unit β€œcm” when you write or say a measurement.
