What is time on a clock?

Time is how we measure moments in the day. A clock shows hours and minutes so we know when things happen.

Examples:
  • 7:00 → Seven o’clock in the morning or evening
  • 3:30 → Three thirty
  • 12:45 → Twelve forty-five
Note

A clock helps us keep track of daily routines like school, meals, and bedtime.

How to read a digital clock

A digital clock shows time using numbers and a colon (:) between hours and minutes.

How to identify:
  • The number before the colon shows the hour.
  • The number after the colon shows the minutes.
  • Example: 4:15 → 4 hours and 15 minutes.
Note

Digital clocks are easier to read because they show the exact numbers for the hour and minutes.

How to read an analog clock

An analog clock has a round face with numbers 1 through 12. It has two main hands: the short hand for the hour and the long hand for the minutes.

How to identify:
  • Short hand → hour
  • Long hand → minutes
  • Example: If the short hand is at 2 and the long hand is at 12, the time is 2:00.
Note

Always read the hour hand first, then the minute hand.

Matching analog and digital clocks

To match times, compare what the analog clock shows with the numbers on a digital clock.

Examples:
  • Analog shows 6:00 → Digital reads 6:00
  • Analog shows 3:30 → Digital reads 3:30
  • Analog shows 9:45 → Digital reads 9:45
Note

When you see the same time on both clocks, you know how to connect analog and digital clocks.

Using time in daily life

We use clocks to plan and organize our day. Knowing how to read both digital and analog clocks helps us stay on schedule.

Examples:
  • School starts at 8:00.
  • Lunch is at 12:30.
  • Bedtime is at 8:30.
Note

Practice looking at clocks throughout your day to become faster at reading time.
