What are even and odd numbers?

Even numbers are numbers that can be divided into two equal groups with no leftovers. Odd numbers are numbers that cannot be divided into two equal groups without having one left over.

Examples:
  • 4 is even because 4 ÷ 2 = 2 with no remainder.
  • 7 is odd because 7 ÷ 2 = 3 with a remainder of 1.
Note

Every whole number is either even or odd—never both.

How to identify even and odd numbers

Look at the ones digit of the number to decide if it is even or odd.

Steps:
  • If the ones digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 → the number is even.
  • If the ones digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 → the number is odd.
  • Example: 246 has a ones digit of 6 → it is even.
  • Example: 931 has a ones digit of 1 → it is odd.
Note

You only need to check the ones digit, no matter how large the number is.

Examples of even and odd numbers up to 1,000

Numbers up to 1,000 follow the same rules for even and odd. Here are some examples:

  • 128 → even (ones digit 8)
  • 435 → odd (ones digit 5)
  • 600 → even (ones digit 0)
  • 777 → odd (ones digit 7)

Checking numbers up to 1,000 works the same way as with smaller numbers—just look at the ones digit.
