What are doubles in addition?

Doubles in addition are when you add the same one-digit number to itself. Doubles facts help us solve addition quickly and are building blocks for other strategies.

Examples:
  • 1 + 1 = 2
  • 2 + 2 = 4
  • 5 + 5 = 10
Note

When both addends are the same number, the problem is a doubles fact.

How to identify doubles

A doubles problem has two of the same one-digit number with a plus sign (+) between them. The answer is always an even number, except for 1 + 1 = 2.

Examples:
  • 3 + 3 = 6
  • 4 + 4 = 8
  • 9 + 9 = 18
Note

If the two numbers are the same, you know it is a doubles fact.

Why doubles are important

Learning doubles facts helps you solve other addition problems faster. Doubles are easy to remember and can be used to solve near doubles (like 6 + 7).

Examples of using doubles:
  • 6 + 6 = 12
  • 7 + 7 = 14
  • Using 6 + 6 to solve 6 + 7: 6 + 6 = 12, then add 1 more = 13
Note

Remembering your doubles facts makes adding quicker and helps with mental math.

Using doubles in word problems

Doubles often appear in real-life situations. Use what you know about doubles to solve them.

Examples:
  • β€œI have 4 pencils, and I get 4 more. How many pencils do I have?” β†’ 4 + 4 = 8
  • β€œThere are 7 ducks in the pond and 7 more ducks join. How many ducks are there?” β†’ 7 + 7 = 14
Note

Think: β€œAm I adding the same number to itself?” If yes, it’s a doubles fact.
