Loading questions...

What is subtraction?

Subtraction is taking away one number from another to find out how many are left. It shows the difference between two numbers.

Example:
  • 7 βˆ’ 3 = 4
Note

Think of subtraction as β€œhow many are left” after you take something away.

How do we identify subtraction?

You can identify subtraction problems by the minus sign (βˆ’). The number before the minus sign is the whole amount, and the number after tells how many to take away.

Examples:
  • 10 βˆ’ 6 = 4
  • 9 βˆ’ 2 = 7
Note

The answer to a subtraction problem is called the difference.

How do we complete a subtraction sentence?

A subtraction sentence shows a complete math problem with all its parts: the whole number, the number being taken away, and the difference (the answer).

Steps:
  • Start with the whole number (example: 8).
  • Take away the smaller number (example: 5).
  • Write the difference (8 βˆ’ 5 = 3).
Note

Always check that your difference is less than the starting number. Subtraction makes the number smaller.

Examples of subtraction sentences

Here are some complete subtraction sentences using one-digit numbers and totals up to 20:

Examples:
  • 6 βˆ’ 2 = 4
  • 12 βˆ’ 7 = 5
  • 9 βˆ’ 3 = 6
  • 15 βˆ’ 8 = 7
Note

Use counting back on a number line or with objects (like cubes or counters) to check your work.

Helpful tips for subtraction

Subtraction can be easier if you use strategies to check your work and make sense of the numbers.

Strategies:
  • Count back: Start at the bigger number and count backward.
  • Use addition: Think β€œWhat number plus 3 makes 8?”
  • Use objects: Counters, blocks, or drawings can help you see what is left.
Note

Subtraction and addition are connected. If you know one, you can check the other!
