What are addition word problems?

Addition word problems are math problems written in sentences. They ask you to join two groups or add numbers together to find the total.

Example:
  • β€œSam has 7 apples. He gets 5 more. How many apples does he have in all?” β†’ 7 + 5 = 12

To identify an addition problem, check if the story is about putting groups together, adding to a group, or finding a total amount.

  • Read the whole problem carefully.
  • Underline numbers in the problem.
  • Look for clue words like all together, join, total, or sum.

Not every problem with numbers is addition. The clue words tell you what operation to use.

To solve, turn the story into a number sentence, then add to find the answer.

  • Find the numbers you need to add.
  • Write a number sentence (for example: 9 + 4 = ?).
  • Solve the addition fact to find the total.
