What does it mean to ask and answer questions?

Asking and answering questions helps us understand a topic better. When we read or learn about something, we can stop and ask: “Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?” Then, we try to answer those questions with information from the text or from what we know.

Examples:
  • Topic: Dogs — Question: “What do dogs need to stay healthy?” Answer: “Dogs need food, water, and exercise.”
  • Topic: The Moon — Question: “Why does the Moon shine?” Answer: “The Moon shines because it reflects light from the Sun.”
Helpful hint

Think of yourself as a curious learner. Asking questions shows interest, and finding answers shows understanding.

Why do we ask questions about a topic?

We ask questions to learn more and to make sense of information. Good readers and writers always wonder about what they are learning. Questions help us stay focused and find details that matter.

Examples:
  • Topic: Butterflies — Question: “Where do butterflies come from?” Answer: “They start as caterpillars and change through metamorphosis.”
  • Topic: Firefighters — Question: “How do firefighters help people?” Answer: “They put out fires and keep communities safe.”
Helpful hint

Asking questions makes your brain active. It helps you remember and explain what you learned.

How do we answer questions about a topic?

We answer questions by looking back at the text, using what we already know, or asking for more information. Answers should be clear and match the question being asked.

Examples:
  • Topic: George Washington — Question: “Who was he?” Answer: “He was the first president of the United States.”
  • Topic: Plants — Question: “What do plants need to grow?” Answer: “Plants need sunlight, water, and soil.”
Helpful hint

Always check: “Did my answer make sense? Did it match the question?”

Putting it all together

Good readers and writers use questions and answers to explore topics. First, ask a question. Next, think about the answer. Then, explain it clearly. This helps your writing and reading become stronger.

Examples:
  • Topic: Sharks — Question: “Why do sharks have sharp teeth?” Answer: “They use their teeth to catch and eat food.”
  • Topic: Abraham Lincoln — Question: “When was he president?” Answer: “He was president during the Civil War, starting in 1861.”
Helpful hint

Remember: Questions lead to answers, and answers show what you have learned.
