What are nouns?

Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals. They tell us what we are talking about in a sentence.

Examples:
  • People: teacher, firefighter, Mia
  • Places: school, park, library
  • Things: pencil, backpack, ball
  • Animals: dog, cat, rabbit
Helpful hint

Ask yourself: β€œWho or what is this sentence about?” The answer is usually a noun.

Common and proper nouns

Common nouns name general people, places, or things. Proper nouns name specific people, places, or things and always begin with a capital letter.

Examples:
  • Common noun: city β†’ Proper noun: New York City

  • β€œWe went to the park.” (noun = park)
