What are root words?

Root words are the basic words that carry the main meaning. Other words can be built from them by adding beginnings (prefixes) or endings (suffixes).

Examples:
  • The root word play can become played, playing, or playful.
  • The root word help can become helper or helpful.

When you find the root word, you can often figure out the meaning of a longer word.

Why are root words important?

Root words help us understand many new words. By knowing the root, you can guess the meaning of words that have prefixes or suffixes added.

Examples:
  • jump is the root. Jumping means β€œis jumping now.” Jumped means β€œjumped before.”
  • kind is the root. Kindness means β€œthe state of being kind.”

When you see a new word, ask yourself: β€œWhat is the root? What does it mean?”
