What are action verbs?

Action verbs are words that tell what a person, animal, or thing does. They show an action you can see or sometimes imagine.

Examples:
  • β€œThe dog runs in the yard.”
  • β€œShe jumps on the trampoline.”
  • β€œI write my homework.”

Ask yourself: β€œWhat is the subject doing?” The answer is the action verb.

Why do writers use action verbs?

Action verbs make sentences clear and lively. They tell exactly what is happening, so the reader can picture the event.

  • Without strong action: β€œThe boy is there.” (unclear)
  • With action: β€œThe boy runs to the park.” (clear and vivid)
