Understanding the Seasons

The year is divided into four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Each season has different weather, activities, and changes in nature. Knowing the seasons helps us describe and measure time throughout the year.

Examples:
  • Winter is often cold with snow in some places.
  • Spring brings warmer weather and flowers start to bloom.
  • Summer is hot, and many people enjoy swimming.
  • Fall has cooler air and leaves change color.
Helpful Hint

Each season lasts about three months, and they always come in the same order: winter, spring, summer, and fall.

Months in Each Season

Each season is made up of certain months. Remembering which months belong to each season helps you connect the calendar to the weather and activities around you.

Examples:
  • Winter: December, January, February
  • Spring: March, April, May
  • Summer: June, July, August
  • Fall: September, October, November
Helpful Hint

Think about holidays or family events during each season to help you remember which months belong to them.

Changes in Nature During the Seasons

Each season brings changes in the weather, plants, animals, and activities. Observing these changes helps us understand the world and measure time in a meaningful way.

Examples:
  • Trees lose their leaves in fall.
  • Flowers grow in spring.
  • People wear lighter clothes in summer.
  • Animals hibernate or stay warm in winter.
Helpful Hint

Look outside your window and notice the changes in plants, animals, and the sky. These signs can help you know what season it is.

Using Seasons to Plan Activities

We often plan activities based on the season. Knowing the season helps us prepare for what we need to wear, what we can do outside, and what kinds of holidays we celebrate.

Examples:
  • Many children play in the snow during winter.
  • Families may plant gardens in spring.
  • Summer is a time for vacations and swimming.
  • Fall is when students return to school.
Helpful Hint

Think of fun activities you do in each season. Connecting activities to the seasons makes them easier to remember.
