Understanding Number Patterns

Number patterns repeat or follow a rule. Finding the rule helps us know which number comes next. Patterns help us see connections and predict what comes after.

Examples:
  • Alternating: 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, []
  • Counting up then repeating: 0, 1, 2, 0, 1, []
  • Groups: 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, [] (two 1s then a 2)
Helpful Hint

Look for a repeating part (a shape, a pair, or a counting pattern). Say the numbers out loud to find the rule.

Patterns with Small Numbers (0–5)

We will use only the numbers 0 through 5. These patterns are easy to practice and perfect for first graders learning to predict the next number.

Examples:
  • 0, 2, 4, 0, 2, [] — the numbers repeat every three steps.
  • 5, 4, 3, 5, 4, [] — count backwards, then repeat.
  • 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, [] — same number repeats.
Helpful Hint

Ask: "What part repeats?" Then fill the blank using that repeating part.

Using Patterns to Solve Problems

Patterns help with counting, measuring time, and sorting. Practicing patterns makes math easier and more fun.

Examples:
  • 2, 3, 4, 2, 3, [] — the numbers go up by 1 and then repeat.
  • 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, [] — the pattern alternates between two numbers.
  • 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, [] — two zeros then a one, then repeat.
Helpful Hint

Try drawing small circles or using fingers to show each repeating part — it makes the rule clearer.
