Loading questions...

What is an addition word problem?

An addition word problem is a short story that tells about putting groups together to find a total. When we add, the number gets bigger.

Example:
  • There are 3 apples on the table. I add 2 more apples.
  • This word problem shows adding groups together.
Note

Look for clues that tell you groups are being joined.

What is an addition sentence?

An addition sentence uses numbers and symbols to show addition. It includes a plus sign (+) and an equals sign (=).

Example:
  • 3 + 2 = 5
  • This sentence matches the apple word problem.
Note

The equals sign means “the same as.”

Matching a word problem to an addition sentence

To match a word problem to an addition sentence, find the numbers in the story and see how they are added together.

Examples:
  • There are 4 birds in a tree. 1 more bird flies in. → 4 + 1 = 5
  • I have 6 crayons. My friend gives me 3 more. → 6 + 3 = 9
Note

The order of the numbers does not change the total.

Using numbers from 0 to 19

In first grade, you add numbers from 0 to 19. The sum will be 20 or less.

Examples:
  • 0 + 7 = 7
  • 8 + 5 = 13
  • 10 + 9 = 19
  • 12 + 6 = 18
Note

Adding zero does not change the number.

Clue words that tell you to add

Some words in a problem help you know that you should add.

Examples of clue words:
  • in all
  • altogether
  • more
  • total
Note

Clue words help you choose the correct math sentence.

Checking your match

After matching a word problem to an addition sentence, check to see if it makes sense.

Example:
  • There are 11 balloons. 4 more balloons are added.
  • Add: 11 + 4 = 15
  • The total is 15 balloons.
Note

Ask yourself if the total is reasonable.
