Understanding Time

Time helps us know when things happen during the day. We can use clocks to tell what time it is. A digital clock shows the time with numbers, like 3:00 or 7:30.

Examples:
  • 8:00 means eight o’clock in the morning.
  • 12:00 means twelve o’clock, or noon.
  • 6:30 means six o’clock and thirty minutes.
Helpful Hint

Read the numbers on a digital clock from left to right. The number before the colon (:) shows the hour, and the number after shows the minutes.

Hours on a Digital Clock

The hour tells us what part of the day it is. Hours go from 1 to 12 and then repeat again. Each number stands for one hour of the day.

Examples:
  • 9:00 means it is nine o’clock.
  • 2:00 means it is two o’clock.
  • 11:00 means it is eleven o’clock.
Helpful Hint

The hour number comes first. If the clock says 4:00, it is four o’clock exactly.

Minutes on a Digital Clock

The minutes tell us how much time has passed after the hour. A clock shows minutes from 00 to 59. When the minutes are 00, it is exactly on the hour.

Examples:
  • 5:15 means fifteen minutes after five.
  • 7:30 means thirty minutes after seven.
  • 10:45 means forty-five minutes after ten.
Helpful Hint

If you see 00 after the colon, it is exactly on the hour. If you see 30, it is half past the hour.

Matching Daily Activities to Time

We use time to plan our daily activities. We can match events in our day to the times on a digital clock.

Examples:
  • School starts at 8:00 in the morning.
  • Lunchtime is at 12:00.
  • Bedtime might be 8:30 in the evening.
Helpful Hint

Think about what you do during the day. Match the activity to the time shown on the clock.

Solving Real-Life Problems with Time

We use clocks every day to know when things start or end. Understanding hours and minutes helps us keep track of our schedules.

Examples:
  • Emma looks at the clock. It says 7:00. She knows it is time for breakfast.
  • At 3:00, Marcus goes to soccer practice.
  • The movie starts at 6:30. The clock shows 6:30, so it is time to begin.
Helpful Hint

Always look at both the hour and the minutes when reading a digital clock. This tells you the exact time.
