What is a number chart?

A number chart shows numbers in order, starting with the smallest number and moving up. Each number comes after the one before it.

Examples:
  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • 11, 12, 13, 14
  • 98, 99, 100
Note

Number charts help students see how numbers grow larger.

Counting forward

Counting forward means saying numbers in order by adding one each time.

Examples:
  • Start at 5: 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Start at 20: 20, 21, 22
  • Start at 99: 99, 100, 101
Note

When counting forward, each number is one more than the last number.

Counting on a number chart from 1 to 120

A 1–120 number chart shows numbers starting at 1 and ending at 120. It is often arranged in rows to make counting easier.

Examples:
  • After 9 comes 10.
  • After 29 comes 30.
  • After 109 comes 110.
Note

New rows on the chart usually begin with numbers that end in zero.

Starting from any number

You do not always have to start at 1. You can count forward from any number on the chart.

Examples:
  • Start at 47: 47, 48, 49, 50
  • Start at 83: 83, 84, 85
  • Start at 115: 115, 116, 117
Note

Look carefully at the chart to find the starting number before counting.

Why counting to 120 is important

Counting forward to 120 helps students understand bigger numbers and prepares them for adding and place value.

Examples:
  • Counting helps you know which number comes next.
  • It helps you read and write numbers correctly.
  • It helps you solve math problems.
Note

Practice counting every day to build strong number skills.
