Understanding Number Comparison

Comparing numbers means deciding which number is greater, which is less, or if they are equal. This helps us understand order and value in math.

Examples:
  • 12 is less than 20 because 12 comes before 20 when counting.
  • 35 is greater than 27 because 35 comes after 27 when counting.
  • 14 is equal to 14 because they are the same number.
Helpful Hint

Look at the number line or count forward to decide which number is bigger. The number that comes later is always greater.

Using Symbols to Compare Numbers

We use special math symbols to compare numbers. These symbols make it easier to read and write comparisons quickly.

Examples:
  • 15 < 18 means 15 is less than 18.
  • 42 > 30 means 42 is greater than 30.
  • 25 = 25 means 25 is equal to 25.
Helpful Hint

The point of the symbol always faces the smaller number. The open side faces the greater number.

Comparing Numbers with Place Value

When comparing numbers from 0 to 50, first look at the tens place. If the tens are the same, then compare the ones place.

Examples:
  • 34 and 29: Compare the tens (3 tens vs. 2 tens). Since 3 is greater than 2, 34 is greater than 29.
  • 16 and 19: Both have 1 ten. Compare the ones (6 vs. 9). Since 9 is greater, 19 is greater than 16.
  • 40 and 40: Both tens and ones are the same, so the numbers are equal.
Helpful Hint

Always check the tens place first. If they are the same, then compare the ones place to see which number is greater or less.

Comparing Numbers in Real Life

Number comparison is useful in everyday situations. It helps us make choices, understand amounts, and solve problems.

Real-Life Examples:
  • Comparing prices at a store: $12 is less than $20, so $12 costs less.
  • Counting steps: 28 steps is greater than 15 steps, so 28 takes longer to climb.
  • Looking at age: A child who is 7 years old is younger than a child who is 9 years old.
Try This

Look at objects, ages, or numbers around you and ask: which is greater, which is less, or are they equal?
