What Are Context Clues?

Context clues are hints in a sentence or story that help you figure out the meaning of an unknown word. You look at the words around it to understand what the word means.

Examples:
  • She wore a scarf around her neck because it was cold. (Scarf is something that keeps you warm.)
  • The puppy is very playful. It runs, jumps, and chases its tail all day. (Playful means full of energy and fun.)
Helpful Hint

If you see a word you don’t know, read the whole sentence. Other words give you clues!

Types of Context Clues

There are different ways sentences can give you clues about a word’s meaning. Here are some common types.

Examples:
  • Definition Clue: The igloo, or ice house, kept the family warm. (The sentence explains the word.)
  • Synonym Clue: The baby was joyful and very happy. (A similar word is given.)
  • Antonym Clue: Unlike the stormy sky yesterday, today is clear. (An opposite word helps you understand.)
Helpful Hint

Watch for words like “or,” “unlike,” or “also.” These words can signal context clues.

Using Context Clues in Sentences

When you read, always try to use context clues before asking someone or checking a dictionary. This helps you become a stronger reader.

Examples:
  • He felt weary after running a long race. He needed to sit and rest. (Weary means tired.)
  • The garden was full of vivid colors like red, yellow, and blue. (Vivid means bright.)
Helpful Hint

Try to guess the word’s meaning first, then check if your guess makes sense in the sentence.

Practice With New Words

You will often meet new words when reading. Practice finding context clues to grow your vocabulary.

Examples:
  • The desert is arid; it hardly gets any rain. (Arid means dry.)
  • The generous boy shared his toys with everyone. (Generous means kind and giving.)
Helpful Hint

Each time you learn a new word, try to use it in your own sentence to remember it better.
