PP.4 Regular plural nouns with -s and -es
Loading questions...
What are nouns?
Nouns are words that name people, places, animals, or things.
Examples:
- person → teacher
- place → school
- animal → dog
- thing → book
Note
If you can see it, touch it, or name it, it is probably a noun.
What are singular and plural nouns?
A singular noun names one person, place, animal, or thing. A plural noun names more than one.
Examples:
- one cat → two cats
- one ball → three balls
- one tree → many trees
Note
Plural nouns show that there is more than one.
Making plural nouns with -s
To make most nouns plural, add -s to the end of the word.
Examples:
- dog → dogs
- car → cars
- apple → apples
Note
If a noun does not end in a special sound, adding -s usually makes it plural.
Making plural nouns with -es
Add -es to nouns that end in s, x, z, ch, or sh.
Examples:
- bus → buses
- box → boxes
- watch → watches
- dish → dishes
Note
These words need -es because they end with sounds that need an extra syllable.
Using plural nouns in sentences
Plural nouns are used when talking about more than one person, place, animal, or thing in a sentence.
Examples:
- The cats are sleeping.
- I see three buses.
- The boxes are on the table.
Note
Always check the ending of the noun to choose -s or -es.
