What is pronoun-verb agreement?
Pronoun-verb agreement means the verb in a sentence must match the pronoun. The verb changes to fit who is doing the action.
Examples:
- I write my name.
- She writes her name.
- They write their names.
Note
The verb sounds different when the pronoun changes.
Using I and you with verbs
The pronouns I and you use the base form of the verb.
Examples:
- I read every day.
- I help my teacher.
- You read every day.
- You help your teacher.
Note
Do not add -s to the verb when using I or you.
Using he, she, and it with verbs
The pronouns he, she, and it use verbs that usually end in -s.
Examples:
- He answers the question.
- She follows the rules.
- It belongs to the class.
Note
If the pronoun means one person or one thing, the verb often ends with -s.
Using we and they with verbs
The pronouns we and they talk about more than one person and use the base form of the verb.
Examples:
- We share our ideas.
- We follow directions.
- They share their ideas.
- They follow directions.
Note
When the pronoun means more than one, the verb does not end in -s.
Checking for correct agreement
You can check pronoun-verb agreement by matching the verb to the pronoun and reading the sentence carefully.
Examples:
- She listens carefully.
- They listen carefully.
- I finish my work.
