What are nouns?

Nouns are words that name people, places, animals, things, or ideas. Nouns help us tell who or what a sentence is about.

Examples:
  • girl
  • school
  • dog
  • book

If you can point to it, name it, or think about it, it is often a noun.

Nouns name people

Nouns can name people. These nouns tell who is in a sentence.

Examples:
  • The boy is running.
  • My teacher is kind.
  • The doctor helps people.

Words like girl, mom, and friend are nouns because they name people.

Nouns name places

Nouns can name places. A place is where someone goes or where something is.

Examples:
  • The class is in the school.
  • We went to the park.
  • The book is on the table.

Places can be big, like a city, or small, like a room.

Nouns name animals and things

Nouns can name animals and things we can see, touch, or use.

Examples:
  • The cat is sleeping.
  • I have a red ball.
  • The car is fast.

Animals and objects are easy nouns to find because you can often see them.

Finding nouns in sentences

To identify nouns in a sentence, ask yourself: Who or what is the sentence about?

Examples:
  • The dog runs fast.
  • The girl reads a book.
  • My family eats dinner together.
Note

A sentence can have more than one noun. Look carefully for all the naming words.
