PP.1 Identify nouns: animals, places, people, and things
What Is a Noun?
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or animal. Nouns help us talk about the world around us.
- Person: teacher, mom, Alex
- Place: park, school, library
- Thing: book, ball, chair
- Animal: dog, cat, bird
Nouns are names. If you can name it, it is probably a noun.
Proper and Common Nouns
Nouns can be common nouns (general names) or proper nouns (special names). Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
- Common: city → Proper: New York
- Common: dog → Proper: Buddy
- Common: store → Proper: Target
Use a capital letter for special names like people, pets, and places.
Singular and Plural Nouns
A noun can name one (singular) or more than one (plural). Plural nouns often add -s or -es.
- Singular: cat → Plural: cats
- Singular: bus → Plural: buses
- Singular: book → Plural: books
To make a noun plural, add -s. If the word ends in s, x, ch, or sh, add -es.
Nouns in Sentences
Nouns can be the subject of a sentence. The subject tells who or what the sentence is about.
- The dog runs fast.
- A teacher reads a book.
- The park is big.
Every complete sentence needs a noun to tell who or what it is about.

Games and activities help children recognize and use nouns with confidence.
