Past Perfect Continuous

For actions in progress before a certain point or event in the past

The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to describe:

  • Actions that started in the past and continued until just before another action
  • Longer past actions that were interrupted or had a result in the past
  • Duration or cause of a past condition or feeling
  • Background to past events, with emphasis on time passed

Structure: had been + verb-ing

Formation Rules - Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Structure Rule:

Past Perfect Continuous = [Subject] + had been + [Base Verb + -ing]

  • Used with all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they)
  • had is always used (no “was” or “were”)
  • been is always required before the -ing verb
  • Example: “She had been working all morning.”

1. Affirmative Sentences

Rule: Subject + had been + verb-ing

  • I had been waiting for two hours.
  • They had been living there since 2010.
  • He had been studying hard before the test.

2. Negative Sentences

Rule: Subject + had not been + verb-ing

  • She had not (hadn’t) been eating well.
  • We hadn't been working on that project long.

3. Yes/No Questions

Rule: Had + subject + been + verb-ing?

  • Had you been waiting long?
  • Had they been playing before it rained?

4. Wh- Questions

Rule: Wh- word + had + subject + been + verb-ing?

  • Why had she been crying?
